The Pictures

This is at Moores creek Battlefield, doesn't it look so pretty with the trees being reflected off the water?

I think this is what they are trying to make us think is the real Moores creek bridge, but the original bridge did not have all of the planks in it, much less the railings!

Oh well, I guess you are probably wondering what Moores creek battle is! I shall inform you.

The Patriots who were defending NC, had a fight with the Loyalists over Moores creek. What the Loyalists needed was to get past Moores creek bridge, so that they could get to the coast to help the british ships. But the Patriots had taken the bridge. The loyalist, Donald McDonald, sent his secratary to give a message to Colonel Caswell, telling them to surrender. Colonel Caswell rejected the letter. But even while the secratary was delivering the message to the patriots, he was counting how many men the patriots had.
When the secratary had gone, Colonel Caswell broke up camp, and joined his men with those of Colonel Lillington, who was waiting on the other side of the bridge.
Late that night the loyalists had a raid on the deserted camp, an then pressed on toward the bridge. Seeing only two sentrys, he made his men cross the bridge.
Many did not make it, for the Patriots had greesed the bridge with soap, so to make it treacherous to try to pass.
When most of them had reached the other side, McDonald called for a charge, but then suddenly a the patriots who were hiding fired on them.
The fight did not last long, 30 of the loyalists were killed, and many taken prisoner.
Yet, only 1 man, Private John Grady, fell on the Americans side.
That was the first battle fought in NC.

Since there are even more pictures to be seen from our trip, I will probably post them later.
Now it is time for bed.

Talk to ya later.

I like the picture of Elder Klazinga in the sand :) Good pictures, Joanna. And thanks for the "history lesson." There's always something new to learn, huh? The Lord loves to remind us that we do not know it all!

Oh, and I like all the "dead" expressions on the victim's faces, too :)

See ya tomorrow night, Lord willing!
